Zara Bicha, Elite
Q: What’s your name and where are you from?
ZARA: My name is Zara, and I’m from Lisbon.
Q: How did you get into modelling?
ZARA: A friend of my sister was signed to Elite in Portugal, so she said ‘I think you have the look; you should try it’. So I sent some pictures over to Elite in Lisbon, and they told me about a competition called Elite Model Look, and asked if I was interested in taking part. So I said sure, and I ended up winning in Portugal. And after winning the national final, I took part in the international one, and got into the top 10. And that’s how I got my contract with Elite Worldwide.
Q: Have you noticed any changes about yourself, having come into the fashion industry?
ZARA: I think I’m more confident now. I’ve always been a confident person, but I just think I believe in myself more, now. And I say this because now I get to travel a lot, and I meet so many different kinds of people. I get to have other experiences that I never thought I would be living at 18yrs old. And I just think I’ve been able to grow with these life experiences.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you would give to aspiring models?
ZARA: I think you have to want it. If you want to be a model, I think you really have to believe in yourself because it’s not easy. Sometimes even, it gets really overwhelming. But at the end of the day, I think the pros outweigh the cons. It’s a hard job, like every job, it has good things and not so nice things; but I love it.
Q: If you were not modelling, what other paths would you have explored?
ZARA: I really wanted to get into business. I was thinking about maybe something related to technology, as that’s something I’ve always enjoyed.
Q: Who is your biggest inspiration, and why?
ZARA: know this might sound cheesy, but it’s my mom. She has accomplished so many things in her life, and she raised me and my 2 other sisters. I think she did a wonderful job! And she always encouraged me to do whatever I want, and to be well-behaved. So she’s my role model.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
ZARA: Just to be myself, and to not let other people change the way I am, in order to fit certain standards. There are so many girls in this industry, and we’re all different; and it’s our differences that make us unique.
